Phenomenology in Contemporary Practices
A Study of the Implementation and Experience of
Northern European Phenomenological Architecture

Summer, 2024

Grant funded research

This booklet will provide a basis for basic ideas on contemporary phenomenological architecture implemented in Northern Europe. After obtaining a research grant from Tulane School of Architecture, I traveled for three weeks to eight buildings by Steven Holl, Peter Zumthor, and Herzog & De Meuron to study how each one uses phenomenology in practice. The research includes conversations with residents and workers of the various projects, personal observations, and a long list of books and lectures by theorists, philosophers, and architects to understand the buildings' concepts and relationships with their place.
